Death in Quran (1) Death = Creature

The Quran is the first book on the face of the earth, which says that Death is but a creature. However, why has Allah created death?

—————————————

Interestingly, the verses 67:1-2 which say Death is created begin with “Blessed is Allah”

Blessed is Allah the exalted and transcendent above the attributes of created beings.

What do we mean when we bless the name of Allah?

We mean that we recognize and proclaim His beneficence to us.

In Allah’s hand and at His disposal, is

  • All Sovereignty,
  • All grace
  • All Authority and
  • All Power to bestow might and abasement, and
  • All Power over the stores of all things

Allah has power over all things.

He is too holy to have children or partners

He is Able to do all that He wills

Allah is Lord of both visible and invisible worlds.

Allah Created Death and Life.

One of the results of Allah’s complete dominion of the universe and absolute power over all things is that He created death and life.

Herein, the Quran puts Death before Life,

Death is therefore not merely a negative state.

Death, then, is

  • The state before life began, which may be nonexistence or existence in some other form:
  • The state in which Life as we know it ceases, but existence does not cease
  • The state of Barrier or Partition, after our visible Death and before Judgment; after that will be the new Life, which we conceive of under the term Eternity.

Why has Allah created death?

Allah created death and life that He may

  • Try you between life and death,
  • Test you in this life,

To see which of you is

  • Best in conduct,
  • Most obedient to Him
  • More sincere in works

Thus, man should always be on the alert, considering every thought and every action.

When a person’s heart is alert, aware that this life is a test, and tries to keep on the right track, he is reassured of God’s forgiveness and grace. This gives man all the rest and comfort he needs.

Allah is

  • the Mighty in retribution against those who disbelieve in Him
  • The Mighty in His vengeance against those who disobey Him,
  • The Forgiving to those who repent to Him;
  • He forgives those who repent and believe in Him.

He is the Mighty in retribution against those who disbelieve in Him, (Forgiving) He forgives those who repent and believe in Him,

Creation, therefore, is not in mere game, or without a purpose with reference to man. The state before our present life, or the state after, we can scarcely understand. But our present Life is clearly given to enable us to strive by good deeds to reach a nobler state.

Allah is so Exalted in Might that He can perfectly carry out His Will and Purpose, and that Purpose is Love, Mercy, and Goodness to His creatures.

The truth Islam establishes in people’s hearts does not depict God as chasing humans to afflict or punish them.

Allah wants them to be aware of the purpose behind their existence and of their true nature. Allah wants them to rise to the level worthy of His honor when He blew of His own spirit into them, elevating them above many of His other creations.

When the believers have absorbed this truth and hold to it, they will find that His grace, mercy and forgiveness are always available to them.

Many people do not know Allah. This series (1-72) is an attempt to help them to know their Creator.

Verses 7:152-154 of the Noble Quran talk about:

1) Allah says: wrath  and abasement shall come upon those who worshipped the calf as a god,

2) The outcome of the calf worshippers is the same as those who invent lies against Allah,

3) Allah and those who do evil deeds and afterward repent,

4) What happened when Moses’ anger abate?

5) What was written in Moses Tablets? And

6) Allah is Forgiving, He overlooks sins, He is the Merciful

In the previous article (67)

And when Moses returned unto his people, angry and grieved when he heard the voice of sedition,

he said: Evil is what you did by worshipping the calf after I went to the mountain. And he cast down the tablets from his hand and two of them were broken, and he seized his brother Aaron dragging him towards him. Aaron said: O my brother! Lo! the folk did judge me weak, humiliated me and almost killed me due to my opposition. Oh, make not mine enemies to triumph over me; make not the enemy, the folk of the calf, spite me and do not place me among the evil-doers! Do not harm me because of the folk of the calf.

And Moses prayed to Allah and said, ‘My Lord, forgive me, what I have done to my brother, and forgive my brother, he includes him in the supplication in order to reconcile him and to fend off any gloating over his misfortune, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the Most Merciful of the merciful’. Then Allah said:

The meaning of verse 7:152

Allah, exalted be He, says:

‘Surely those who chose the calf, as a god and worshipped it, and whoever emulates them; (what about them?) Terror, wrath, chastisement, and abasement shall come upon them from their Lord in the life of this world [and so they were punished for this deed by the command to slay themselves] and abasement was stamped upon them until the Day of Resurrection.

Even, as Allah has requited them, so He requites those who invent lies, against Allah by way of idolatry and otherwise. In other words, Thus does Allah requite those who invent a lie against Him.

The meaning of verse 7:153

But those who do ill deeds while ascribing partners to Allah, and afterward repent, after their idolatry; it is also said that this means: after committing transgressions and profess Allah’s divine Oneness and believe in Allah lo! for them, afterward, after repentance and accepting faith, your Lord O Moses; and it is also said: O Muhammad is Forgiving, He overlooks sins, He is the Merciful.

In other words, the verse says:

But those who commit evil deeds and repent, desist from them, thereafter and believe, in Allah, indeed your Lord thereafter, that is, after their repentance, is truly Forgiving, Merciful’, towards them.

The meaning of verse 7:154

And when Moses’ anger abate, subsided, he took the Tablets, which he had cast down, and in their copy, that is, in what was inscribed upon them — in other words, it was written that: there was guidance, from error, and mercy for all those who hold their Lord in awe, who have fear of Allah.

In other words, the verse says:

Then, when the anger of Moses abated, he took up the tablets, and in their inscription in what remained in them;  it is also said: in what was returned to him of the two tablets, there was guidance from error and there was mercy preventing from torment for all those who fear their Lord, Allah.

Verses 7:152-154 in different English translations of the meanings of Arabic Quran:

QARIB:

152) Those who worshipped the calf incurred the anger of their Lord and abasement in this life, and as such we recompense the forgers.

153) As for those who do evil and later repent and believe, your Lord is forgiving, the most merciful thereafter.

154) When his anger abated, Moses took up the tablets upon which was inscribed guidance and mercy to those who fear their Lord.

SHAKIR:

152) (As for) those who took the calf (for a god), surely wrath from their Lord and disgrace in this world’s life shall overtake them, and thus do we recompense the devisers of lies

153) and (as to) those who do evil deeds, then repent after that and believe, your Lord after that is most surely forgiving, merciful

154) And when Musa’s anger calmed down he took up the tablets, and in the writing thereof was guidance and mercy for those who fear for the sake of their Lord

PICKTHAL:

152) Lo! Those who chose the calf (for worship), terror from their Lord and humiliation will come upon them in the life of the world. Thus do we requite those who invent a lie.

153) But those who do ill-deeds and afterward repent and believe – lo! for them, afterward, Allah is forgiving, merciful.

154) Then, when the anger of Moses abated, he took up the tablets, and in their inscription there was guidance and mercy for all those who fear their Lord.

YUSUFALI:

152) Those who took the calf (for worship) will indeed be overwhelmed with wrath from their Lord, and with shame in this life: thus do we recompense those who invent (falsehoods).

153) But those who do wrong but repent thereafter and (truly) believe,- verily thy Lord is thereafter oft-forgiving, most merciful.

154) When the anger of Moses was appeased, he took up the tablets: in the writing thereon was guidance and mercy for such as fear their Lord.
