The chiefs unbelievers of Mecca used to say mockingly: ‘O Muhammad, bring on us the chastisement you promised us’. The punishment for which they have asked happened, some of them were killed and the others were caught captive on the Battle of Badr.

They hasten their punishment!
The chiefs wealthy unbelievers of Mecca used to say mockingly to the Prophet: ‘O Muhammad bring on us the chastisement you promised us’, and so this verse was revealed”.
Ayah 6:57-58: Say to them O Muhammad:
I am relying on clear proof from my Lord and I have full insight of my matter and religion.
And you deny the Quran and Allah’s divine Oneness when you associated others with Him.
I do not have that which you seek to hasten, of the chastisement i.e. your punishment.
The decision to send a punishment on you is for Allah only. His judgement is just and He command s only that which is right. He is the Best of Deciders. He is the best of Judges.
Also, Say to them O Muhammad:
If I had that for which you were impatient i.e. punishment, you would have already been destroyed.
Allah is best awwere of the wrong-doers and of the punishment of the idolaters.
Then, years after this event, the punishment for which the chiefs unbelievers of Mecca asked happened, some of them were killed and the others were caught captive on the Day of Badr (the first battle between the Muslims and the unbelievers of Mecca).
