Allah Asks you (19) Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know?

Allah asks: Is he who devotes himself in worship to be counted equal to the disbeliever?

Allah says: Only people of understanding acknowledge the Wisdom of the Quran

Allah says: Dwell in your disbelief in this life then Dwell in the Eternal Fire in the Hereafter

In verse 39:9, Allah is asking mankind these two questions:

1) Is one who worships devoutly during the hours of the night prostrating himself or standing (in adoration), who takes heed of the Hereafter, and who places his hope in the Mercy of his Lord, (like one who does not)? Say:

2) Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know?

Then Allah says: It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition”

In the Noble Quran, Allah is asking mankind some important questions.

It seems compulsory for the serious one who is looking for the truth to have a look at those questions and if possible to answer them.

Allah’ questions are many. In this series, these questions are chosen randomly.

In verse 39:9, Allah asks mankind especially these two questions:

Verses 39:8-9 give the question of this article and talk about it

The meanings of the verses 39:8-9

Verse 39:8 says:

And when some hurt, hardship, distress and trial befalls a person, that is, the disbeliever,

He cries unto his Lord, supplicates his Lord, he implores, turning, returning, to Him penitently to lift away the hardship and trial. Then, when He bestows on him a grace from Himself,

When He grants him,

He forgets that for which he cried unto Him before) before the blessing,

He neglects, Him Whom he had supplicated, implored, before, namely, God and sets up equals, associates, with God, that he may lead [others] astray from His way

He sets up rivals and equals to Allah that he may beguile other people from His way, from His religion and obedience.

Say: Take pleasure in your disbelief; dwell in your disbelief for a while, a little in the life of this world.

Say: ‘Revel in your ingratitude for a while, for the remainder of your term [of life].

You shall indeed be among the inhabitants of the Eternal Fire’.

Verse 39:9 says:

Is he who:

1) Pays adoration, 

2) Devotes himself in worship,

3) Observes duties of obedience,

4) Obeys Allah, in the watches of the night, in the hours of the night, prostrate and standing in prayer, bewaring of the Hereafter, fearing its chastisement, fearing the torment of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, and hoping for the Garden of his Lord, the Paradise of his Lord

5) To be counted equal to the disbeliever?

Say to them, O Muhammad:

Are those who know Allah’s divine Oneness and Allah’s commands and prohibitions, equal in reward and acts of obedience with those who do not know Allah’s divine Oneness or Allah’s commands and prohibitions?

But only men of understanding, only those possessed of intellect among people will pay heed, will take admonition from the wisdom of the Quran.

Only people of pith remember the knowledge of the Quran.

Verses 39:8-9 in different translations:

QARIB:

8) When an affliction befalls a human, he supplicates to his lord and turns to him (in repentance) yet, no sooner does he bestow on him his blessing than he forgets that for which he had just supplicated and sets up associates with Allah in order to lead (people) away from his path. say: ‘enjoy your disbelief for awhile, you shall surely be among the companions of the fire.

9) or, is he who is obedient that prostrates himself and stands during parts of the night, being afraid of the everlasting life but hoping for the mercy of the lord (to be compared to the unbeliever)? ‘Say: ‘are they equal, those who know and those who do not know? ‘Only those with minds remember.

 

SHAKIR:

8) And when distress afflicts a man he calls upon his lord turning to him frequently; then when he makes him possess a favor from him, he forgets that for which he called upon him before, and sets up rivals to Allah that he may cause (men) to stray off from his path. say: enjoy yourself in your ungratefulness a little, surely you are of the inmates of the fire

9) What! He, who is obedient during hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing, takes care of the hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his lord! say: are those who know and those who do not know alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful

 

PICKTHAL:

8) And when some hurt toucheth man, he crieth unto his lord, turning unto him (repentant). then, when he granteth him a boon from him he forgetteth that for which he cried unto him before, and setteth up rivals to Allah that he may beguile (men) from his way. say (O Muhammad, unto such an one): take pleasure in thy disbelief a while. lo! Thou art of the owners of the fire.

9) is he who payeth adoration in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his lord, (to be accounted equal with a disbeliever)? say (unto them, O Muhammad): are those who know equal with those who know not? but only men of understanding will pay heed.

 

YUSUFALI:

8) When some trouble toucheth man, he crieth unto his lord, turning to him in repentance: but when he bestoweth a favour upon him as from himself, (man) doth forget what he cried and prayed for before, and he doth set up rivals unto Allah, thus misleading others from Allah’s path. Say, “enjoy thy blasphemy for a little while: verily thou art (one) of the companions of the fire!”

9) Is one who worships devoutly during the hour of the night prostrating himself or standing (in adoration), who takes heed of the hereafter, and who places his hope in the mercy of his lord – (like one who does not)? Say: “are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.

Allah does not love (8) the Unjust

The Blessings God bestows upon the Disbelievers are …!

The days of the life of this world are vicissitudes, the Quran and the History said

We have seen that Allah does not love those:

1) the disbelievers,

2) the arrogant,

3) those who reject faith,

4) the proud and the boastful,

5) any swaggering braggart, strutting in his steps,

6) the harm doers and

7) any vainglorious prideful boasters.

In this article, that Allah does not love the Unjust;  those that do wrong.

Moreover, the Quran declares the fact that the days of the life of this world are vicissitudes among men, folks and nations

The meanings of verse 3:140 of the Noble Quran:

Background:

The Day of Badr is the first battle between the believers (300 men) and the disbelievers (1000 men); the believers won that battle in great astonishing success.

The Day of Uhud is the second battle between the believers (550 men) and the disbelievers (1200 men), at first the believers won then the disbelievers won at the end.

Verse 3:140 says that:

If a wound touches you, befalls you at Uhud,

If ye have received a blow, if you were harmed on the Day of Uhud

The people of Mecca, the disbelievers, have received on the Day of Badr harm like the harm you received on the Day of Uhud.

i.e., a like wound, already, at Badr, has touched the other people, the disbelievers.

These are only the vicissitudes, the days of the life of this world, which Allah cause to follow one another for mankind, sometimes the believers have the upper hand over the unbelievers and sometimes it is the unbelievers who have the upper hand over the believers,

Such days Allah deal out in turn, Allah dispense them, among mankind, one day for one group, the next day for another, that they might be admonished,

And that God may know, through knowledge manifested outwardly, those who believe, who are sincere in their faith from others;

And that He may take witnesses from among you, honoring them with martyrdom, and God loves not the evildoers, the disbelievers,

That is, He will chastise them severely at the day of Judgment,

And the blessings He bestows upon the disbelievers are only a means of drawing out their punishment.

The days of the life of this world are vicissitudes:

This is a fact that said in the Noble Quran more than 1400 years ago.  Anyone who studies the history of men, folks and nations appreciates and acknowledges such fact.

Verse 3:140 in different translations

QARIB:

If a wound touches you, a similar wound already has touched the nation. Such days we alternate between the people so that Allah knows those who believe, and that he will take witnesses from among you, for Allah does not love the harm doers,

SHAKIR:

If a wound has afflicted you (at Uhud), a wound like it has also afflicted the (unbelieving) people; and we bring these days to men by turns, and that Allah may know those who believe and take witnesses from among you; and Allah does not love the unjust.

PICKTHAL:

If ye have received a blow, the (disbelieving) people have received a blow the like thereof. these are (only) the vicissitudes which we cause to follow one another for mankind, to the end that Allah may know those who believe and may choose witnesses from among you; and Allah loveth not wrong-doers.

YUSUFALI:

If a wound hath touched you, be sure a similar wound hath touched the others. Such days (of varying fortunes) we give to men and men by turns: that Allah may know those that believe, and that he may take to himself from your ranks martyr-witnesses (to truth). And Allah loveth not those that do wrong.

The great lesson of Luqman to his son

In the previous articles, we have seen that Allah does not love

(1) the disbelievers,

2) the arrogant,

3) those who reject faith and

4) the proud and the boastful; and there is an essential association between the disbelief and the arrogance.  

In this article, Luqman, the wise man, is giving great advices to his son then he said that Allah does not like any swaggering braggart, strutting in his step, boasting in front of people.  Luqman’s wisdom should be given to the students in schools.

The meanings of verse 31:16-18 of the Noble Quran:

Verses 31:16-18 are a great lesson of Luqman to his son.

 

In verse 31:16, Luqman said:

 ‘O my dear son! Even if it, namely, the evil trait, should be the weight of a grain of mustard -seed,

And even if it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth,

In other words, in the most concealed place therein,

Allah will bring it forth to the one it is destined wherever he might be, and He will call that person to account for it.

Truly God is Subtle and Subtile, in bringing it forth, Aware, of its location.

 

In verse 31:17, Luqman said:

O my dear son!

Establish worship

Perform the prescribed prayer

Enjoin decency

Enjoin kindness through the profession of Allah’s divine Oneness and beneficence

Forbid indecency

Forbid iniquity, idolatry and foul words and deeds

Persevere whatever may befall you throughout

And be patient through whatever may befall you, as a result of such enjoining and forbidding.

Truly that i.e. enjoining good and forbidding evil, which is mentioned, is true constancy.  In other words, that is one of those necessary things regarding which one must have firm resolve.

It is also said that this refers to steadfastness (is of the steadfast heart of things) of the best and most resolute of things.

 

In verse 31:18, Luqman said:

Do not turn your cheek disdainfully from people

Do not turn your cheek in scorn towards folk

Do not turn your face away from people out of pride and haughtiness towards them,

Do not turn your face away in disdain,

Do not walk upon the earth exultantly, in other words, with haughtiness.

Do not walk with pertness the land, displaying hubris and pretentiousness

Truly Allah does not like any swaggering braggart, strutting in his step, [boasting] in front of people.

QARIB:

16) (Luqman said 🙂 ‘My son, if it should be but the weight of one grain of mustard seed, and though it be on a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah shall bring it. Surely, Allah is the subtle, aware.

17) my son, establish the prayer, order with honor but forbid dishonor, and bear patiently with whatever may fall upon you, indeed that is true constancy.

18) Do not turn your cheek in scorn away from people, nor walk proudly on the earth; Allah does not love the proud and the boastful.

 

SHAKIR:

16) O my son! surely if it is the very weight of the grain of a mustard-seed, even though it is in (the heart of) rock, or (high above) in the heaven or (deep down) in the earth, Allah will bring it (to light); surely Allah is knower of subtleties, aware;

17) O my son! Keep up prayer and enjoin the good and forbid the evil, and bear patiently that which befalls you; surely these acts require courage;

18) And do not turn your face away from people in contempt, nor go about in the land exulting overmuch; surely Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster;

 

PICKTHAL:

16) O my dear son! Lo! Though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Lo! Allah is Subtile, aware.

17) o my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! That is of the steadfast heart of things.

18) Turn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk, nor walk with pertness in the land. lo! Allah loveth not each braggart boaster.

 

YUSUFALI:

16) “O my son!” (Said Luqman), “if there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them)

17) “O my son! Establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs.

18) “And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster.
