Surah 31 of the Quran (1) Introduction

Introduction

In this Surah, the Quran addresses human nature with its own logic.

Allah who revealed the Quran is the One who created human nature.

Allah knows what suits human nature and brings the best out of it.

He also knows how to address it and what affects its inner thoughts and feelings.

 

The Quran explains to human nature the truth that is deeply ingrained in it,

The Quran explains to human nature the fact that is deeply-rooted in it,

The Quran explains to human nature the truth that is deeply embedded in it,

Such truth is built in inside every human nature which it knew long before it was addressed by the Quran, because it was initially created with it.

This is the truth of acknowledging the Creator, the One, the Supreme, and offering worship to Him alone.

 

Similarly, every creature in the entire universe glorifies and praises Him at all times.

The problem is that certain aspects of life on earth, some physical impulses, desires, whims and cravings may cloud human nature’s vision or force its deviation from the right path.

That is why; the Quran addresses our nature with the logic it knows, presenting to it the truth that it has overlooked.

In this way, the Quran structures human nature on the basis of its right code for living, leading it to earn the pleasure of Allah, the Supreme Creator who controls everything.

 

Surah 31 provides an example of how the Quran addresses the human hearts.

It tackles the question of faith among the idolaters who had deviated from the truth.

The faith is indeed the leading issue of Surah 31

The Quran tackles this important issue in a variety of ways and from different angles.

That the Quran uses such different means is an essential part of its method to keep our hearts on the alert.

 

The central issue of faith focuses in Surah 31 on the Creator’s oneness.

Surah 31 demonstrates how we:

1)    Should address worship to Him alone,

2)    Express gratitude for His blessings,

3)    Establish firm belief in the hereafter and what this involves of careful reckoning and just reward. The hereafter or the Afterlife is but one of two either hell or Paradise.

Therefore, Believers should also follow what Allah has revealed and abandon all notions that are at inconsistency with this.

Surah 31 presents this whole issue in a way that invites reflection on the astonishing approach of the Quran. It addresses our natures and our hearts.

All who advocate faith should study this Quranic approach carefully.

Verses 7:101-103 of the Noble Quran talk about:

1) Allah’s messengers brought the ancient disbelievers clear proofs, but they would not believe,

2) They were indeed wicked, that is why they deserved Allah’s destruction,

3) The Historical consequence for the ancient corrupters

4) Allah sent Moses with nine signs to Pharaoh,

5) Allah Sent His messengers with clear proofs, commands, prohibitions etc. And

6) The Quran describes the outcome of the breakers of covenants among the ancient people.

The meaning of verse 7:101

Those towns, which have been mentioned whose people Allah had destroyed,  Allah narrates, Allah sends you O Muhammad the Angel Gabriel with some of their tidings, with the story of their destruction. 

Verily their messengers brought them clear proofs, manifest miracles, but they would not believe, when these signs came to them, in what they had denied, disbelieved in, before, before these signs came to them; nay, they persisted in disbelief. Thus, Allah does seal up the hearts of the disbelievers.

In other words, Their messengers verily came unto them with clear proofs) with commands, prohibitions and signs, (but they could not believe) in the Scriptures or messengers (because they had before denied) i.e. on the Day of the Covenant; it is also said the last of nations did not believe in that which the first of nations disbelieved.

 

The meaning of verse 7:102

And We did not find in most of them, that is, people, any covenant, that is, any loyalty to a covenant from the day the pledge was made. Nay, Allah found that most of them, all of them, were indeed wicked, wrong-doers and breakers of covenants.

 

The meaning of verse 7:103

Then Allah sent, after them, after the messengers mentioned, Moses with nine signs to Pharaoh and his council and his chiefs, his folk, but they mistreated, they disbelieved in them; they repelled and denied Allah’ signs.

So behold what was the end of those who work corruption, by way of disbelief, when they were destroyed.

In other words, see the nature of the consequence for the corrupters; see how destruction was the end result of the idolaters!

Verses 7:101-103 in different English translations of the meanings of Arabic Quran:

QARIB:

101) Those villages we narrate their news to you. their messengers came to them with clear proofs, yet they would not believe what they had belied before; as such Allah seals the hearts of the unbelievers.

102) We did not find the covenant upheld by the majority of them, but we found most of them evildoers.

103) After those we sent forth moses with our signs to pharaoh and his assembly, but with it they harmed. look at the end of the corrupters.

 

SHAKIR:

101) These towns– we relate to you some of their stories, and certainly their messengers came to them with clear arguments, but they would not believe in what they rejected at first; thus does Allah set a seal over the hearts of the unbelievers

102) And we did not find in most of them any (faithfulness to) covenant, and we found most of them to be certainly transgressors

103) Then we raised after them musa with our communications to firon and his chiefs, but they disbelieved in them; consider then what was the end of the mischief makers

 

PICKTHAL:

101) Such were the townships. we relate some tidings of them unto thee (Muhammad). their messengers verily came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah’s sovereignty), but they could not believe because they had before denied. thus doth Allah print upon the hearts of disbelievers (that they hear not).

102) We found no (loyalty to any) covenant in most of them. nay, most of them we found wrong-doers.

103) Then, after them, we sent moses with our tokens unto pharaoh and his chiefs, but they repelled them. now, see the nature of the consequence for the corrupters!

 

YUSUFALI:

101) Such were the towns whose story we (thus) relate unto thee: there came indeed to them their messengers with clear (signs): but they would not believe what they had rejected before. thus doth Allah seal up the hearts of those who reject faith.

102) Most of them we found not men (true) to their covenant: but most of them we found rebellious and disobedient.

103) Then after them we sent Moses with our signs to pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them: so see what was the end of those who made mischief.

The meaning of verses 7:54-56

The meaning of verse 7:54

Surely your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, each day the equivalent of a thousand years. Had He willed He could have created them in an instant; but the reason for His not having done so is that He wanted to teach His creatures to be circumspect. 

Then Allah presided upon the Throne, a presiding befitting of Him.

He cloaks the night with the day, that is, He covers each one with the other: each following the other in swift pursuit, i.e. the day is in haste to follow the night and the night is in haste to follow the day,

And the sun and the moon and the stars have been made subservient, have been subdued, by His command, by His power.

His verily is all creation, the creation of the heavens and the earth (and what are between them) and His verily is all the commandments i.e. the judgment of people on the Day of Judgment.

Blessed, Magnified, be Allah, the Possessor of grace; it is also said that this means: elevated is Allah; as it is said that this means: far exalted is Allah, the Lord, the Master of the Worlds!

 

The meaning of verse 7:55

O mankind! Call upon your Lord respectfully openly and in secret.  In other words, call upon your Lord humbly, in subservience, and quietly, in secret. Truly, He does not love the aggressors, who are braggarts and loud-mouthed in their supplications.  In other words, He does not love the aggressors, in their supplications, by calling for that which is not permissible for them against the righteous.

 

The meaning of verse 7:56

And work not corruption in the land, through idolatry, sins and invitation to other than Allah and acts of disobedience, after it has been set right, as a result of the sending forth of messengers to it, and call upon Him, worship Him in fear, of His punishment and His torment, and in hope, of His mercy that you shall enter His Paradise. Surely the mercy of Allah is near to the virtuous, the obedient.  In other words, Lo! the mercy of Allah, the Paradise of Allah is nigh unto the good, the believers who are good in their words and works.

Verse 7:54

QARIB:

54) Your Lord is Allah, who, in six days created the heavens and the earth, and then willed to the throne. he throws the veil of night over the day. swiftly they follow one another. the sun, the moon, and the stars are compelled to his order. his is the creation, his is the command. blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

55) Supplicate to your Lord with humility and in secret. he does not love the transgressors.

56) Do not make mischief in the earth after it has been put right. pray to him with fear and hope; his mercy is near to the righteous.

 

SHAKIR:

54) Surely your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six periods of time, and he is firm in power; he throws the veil of night over the day, which it pursues incessantly; and (he created) the sun and the moon and the stars, made subservient by his command; surely his is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds

55) Call on your Lord humbly and secretly; surely he does not love those who exceed the limits

56) And do not make mischief in the earth after its reformation, and call on him fearing and hoping; surely the mercy of Allah is nigh to those who do good (to others)

 

PICKTHAL:

54) Lo! Your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then mounted he the throne. he covereth the night with the day, which is in haste to follow it, and hath made the sun and the moon and the stars subservient by his command. his verily is all creation and commandment. blessed be Allah, the Lord of the worlds!

55) (O mankind!) call upon your Lord humbly and in secret. lo! he loveth not aggressors.

56) Work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering (thereof). and call on him in fear and hope. lo! the mercy of Allah is nigh unto the good.

 

YUSUFALI:

54) Your guardian-Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): he draweth the night as a veil o’er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: he created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under his command. is it not his to create and to govern? blessed be Allah, the cherisher and sustainer of the worlds!

55) Call on your Lord with humility and in private: for Allah loveth not those who trespass beyond bounds.

56) Do no mischief on the earth, after it hath been set in order, but call on him with fear and longing (in your hearts): for the mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good.

Verses 7:87-89 of the Noble Quran talk about:

1) The productive debate between the Prophet Shuayb and the Leaders of Madyan,

2) Allah is the best of deciders, the best of adjudicators,

3) Allah’s knowledge embraces all things; He knows everything,

4) The believers could not convert unless Allah takes away the knowledge from their hearts and

5) Allah is the best of judges, the fairest of them.

In the previous article, the Prophet Shuayb said unto the people of Madyan (Midian):O my people,

worship Allah! you have no god other than Him,

give full measure and weight and do not diminish the value of people’s goods, and do not work corruption in the earth,

Do not Lurk on every road that people use to threaten, scare and take the clothes of strangers, and to turn away the believers from Allah’s path.

And remember when you were but few, and then Allah multiplied you. And behold what was the end of the agents of corruption, before you, for denying their messengers, that is, behold how destruction was the conclusion of their affair.

Then, Shuayb said unto them:

The meaning of verse 7:87

And if there is a party of you who believe in that with which I have been sent, and a party who do not believe, in it, then have patience and wait until Allah judges between us and you, by delivering the affirmer of this truth and destroying the denier of it. Allah is the best of judges, the fairest of them.

 

The meaning of verse 7:88

The chieftains of Madyan, who were scornful and disdainful towards believing said:

‘Surely we will expel you, O Shuayb, and those who believe with you, from our township, unless you return to embrace our creed, our religion

(herein, the plural person  predominates over the singular in their address [to Shuayb] because Shuayb was never part of their religious community; and so in the same [plural] way Shuayb responded.

Shuayb said:

‘What, should we return to it, even though we are averse, to it? Even though we hate it?) would you force us to do this even though we hate it?

(the interrogative herein is meant as a disavowal).

 

The meaning of verse 7:89

The Prophet Shuayb continued:

We would be forging a lie against Allah if we were to return to your creed after Allah has delivered us from it.

We should have invented a falsehood against Allah if we returned to your religion after Allah has rescued us from it

It is not, right, for us to return to it, unless Allah our Lord wills that [it be so] and forsakes us.

In other words, it is not permissible for us to embrace your religion: associating others with Allah unless Allah takes away the knowledge from our hearts.

Our Lord embraces all things through His knowledge, that is to say, His knowledge embraces all things, including my situation and yours. In Allah we have put our trust.

Then Shuayb prayed:

Our Lord, decide with truth, adjudicate with justice, between us and our people, for You are the best of deciders’, adjudicators; for You are the best of those who make decision, the best of judges.

QARIB:

87) If there are some among you who believe in that which i have been sent and others who disbelieve it, be patient until Allah shall judge between us. he is the best of judges. ‘

88) The proud assembly of his nation said: ‘we will expel you shu’aib and those who believe with you from our village unless you return to our creed. ‘ he replied: ‘even though we hate it?

89) We would have invented lies about Allah if we returned to your creed from which Allah has saved us, it is not for us that we return into it again except if Allah, our Lord wills. for our Lord has embraced everything with knowledge, and in Allah we have put our trust. our Lord, open between us and our nation with truth, you are the best of openers. ‘

 

SHAKIR:

87) And if there is a party of you who believe in that with which am sent, and another party who do not believe, then wait patiently until Allah judges between us; and he is the best of the judges

88) The chiefs, those who were proud from among his people said: we will most certainly turn you out, o shu’aib, and (also; those who believe with you, from our town, or you shall come back to our faith. he said: what! though we dislike (it)?

89) Indeed we shall have forged a lie against Allah if we go back to your religion after Allah has delivered us from it, and it befits us not that we should go back to it, except if Allah our Lord please: our Lord comprehends all things :n his knowledge; in Allah do we trust: our Lord! decide between us and our people with truth; and thou art the best of deciders

 

PICKTHAL:

87) And if there is a party of you which believeth in that wherewith i have been sent, and there is a party which believeth not, then have patience until Allah judge between us. he is the best of all who deal in judgment.

88) The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said: surely we will drive thee out, o shu’eyb, and those who believe with thee, from our township, unless ye return to our religion. he said: even though we hate it?

89) We should have invented a lie against Allah if we returned to your religion after Allah hath rescued us from it. it is not for us to return to it unless Allah our Lord should (so) will. our Lord comprehendeth all things in knowledge. in Allah do we put our trust. our Lord! decide with truth between us and our folk, for thou art the best of those who make decision.

 

YUSUFALI:

87) “And if there is a party among you who believes in the message with which i have been sent, and a party which does not believe, hold yourselves in patience until Allah doth decide between us: for he is the best to decide.

88) The leaders, the arrogant party among his people, said: “o shu’aib! we shall certainly drive thee out of our city – (thee) and those who believe with thee; or else ye (thou and they) shall have to return to our ways and religion.” he said: “what! even though we do detest (them)?

89) “We should indeed invent a lie against Allah, if we returned to your ways after Allah hath rescued us therefrom; nor could we by any manner of means return thereto unless it be as in the will and plan of Allah, our Lord. our Lord can reach out to the utmost recesses of things by his knowledge. in the Allah is our trust. our Lord! decide thou between us and our people in truth, for thou art the best to decide.”

Allah does not love (21) The Mischief-Maker

The hypocrite speaks kindly but he is corrupter, the Quran said

The hypocrites tried to deceive the Prophet Muhammad!

The hypocrite reserved a dwelling place in the HELL, What a resting place it is!

We have seen that Allah does not love the disbelievers, the arrogant, those who reject faith, the proud and the boastful, any swaggering braggart strutting in his steps, the harm doers, any vainglorious prideful boasters, those that do wrong, the unjust, the impious and guilty, the unfaithful and ungrateful, the transgressors, those who exceed the limits, the farthest who trespass beyond bounds, the extravagant and Qaroun, Moses’ cousin and the alike.   In this article, that Allah does not love the mischief-maker.

The meanings of the verses 2:204-206 of the Noble Quran:

 

Verse 2:204 says:

And of mankind there is he whose speech and conversation on the life of this world pleases you, (O Muhammad), his speech, words and outward appearance pleases you, but it would not please you in the Hereafter because it contradicts what he actually used to believe; and who calls on God to witness what is in his heart, as being in accordance with what he says; yet he is most stubborn in dispute, with you and your followers on account of his enmity towards you:

He swears by Allah that he loves and follows you;

Yet he is the most rigid of opponents, yet he argues about falsehood and is a staunch opponent.

This was revealed about a hypocrite who spoke kindly in the presence of the Prophet Muhammad, swearing that he believed in him and that he loved him, and frequently sitting with him. God then revealed his mendacity in this matter. On one occasion he passed by some crops and livestock that belonged to the Muslims and later that night he set fire to them [the crops] and slaughtered them [the livestock]. God, moreover, says:

 

Verse 2:205 says:

And when he turns his back, leaving you behind, he hastens, he walks, about the earth to do corruption there and to destroy the tillage and the stock

These last two actions are included in such ‘corruption’;

In other words, his effort in the land is to make mischief therein by committing transgressions and to destroy the crops and stacks of grain by burning them and the cattle by killing them;

And Allah does not love corruption that is to say, it does not please Him; it means that He will punish the corrupters.

 

Verse 2:206 says:

And when it is said to him, be careful of your duty to Allah, regarding what you are doing, Fear God’, in your actions

He takes offence because of his pride.

He is seized by vainglory, pride and rage, in his sin, the one he was commanded to avoid committing.

Hell will settle his account, his destination will be Hell

So Hell shall be enough, it suffices, for him!

How evil a cradling, a resting place it is!

Verses 2:204-206 in different translations

QARIB:

204) There is he whose sayings pleases you in this worldly life and uses Allah as a witness for what is in his heart, but he is most stubborn in adversary.

205) No sooner does he leave than he hastens about the earth to corrupt there and destroy crops and cattle. Allah does not love corruption.

206) When it is said to him: ‘fear Allah, ‘ egotism takes him in his sin. gehenna (hell) shall be enough for him. how evil a cradling!

 

SHAKIR:

204) And among men is he whose speech about the life of this world causes you to wonder, and he calls on Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the most violent of adversaries

205) And when he turn,s back, he runs along in the land that he may cause mischief in it and destroy the tilth and the stock, and Allah does not love mischief-making

206) And when it is said to him, guard against (the punishment of) Allah; pride carries him off to sin, therefore hell is sufficient for him; and certainly it is an evil resting place

 

PICKTHAL:

204) And of mankind there is he whoso conversation on the life of this world pleaseth thee (Muhammad), and he calleth Allah to witness as to that which is in his heart; yet he is the most rigid of opponents.

205) And when he turneth away (from thee) his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle; and Allah loveth not mischief.

206) And when it is said unto him: be careful of thy duty to Allah, pride taketh him to sin. Hell will settle his account, an evil resting-place.

 

YUSUFALI:

204) There is the type of man whose speech about this world’s life may dazzle thee, and he calls Allah to witness about what is in his heart; yet is he the most contentious of enemies.

205) When he turns his back, his aim everywhere is to spread mischief through the earth and destroy crops and cattle. but Allah loveth not mischief.

206) When it is said to him, “fear Allah”, he is led by arrogance to (more) crime. Enough for him is hell;-an evil bed indeed (to lie on)!

Allah loves (13) those who purify themselves

When the Hypocrites built a place to worship God?

The Believers’ Mosque versus the Hypocrites’ Mosque!

In the previous articles, we have seen that Allah loves those:

1) the kind good doers,

2) those who turn to him and those who are Clean and Pure, 3) those who guard against evil,

4) those who put their Trust in Him,

5) those who are firm and steadfast,

6) the virtuous,

7) the charitable,

8) judge in equity,

9) those who are just and are not biased,

10) the good doers who keep their Covenant,

11) the generous and

12) those who keep their duty. 

In this article, Allah loves those who purify themselves physically and spiritually.

Verse 9:108 says that Allah loves those who purify themselves physically and spiritually.

Verse 9:107 was revealed after the hypocrites built a place for prayer!

The Story was: some hypocrites thought to build a mosque and sent for Muhammad, to come to them.  When they finished building this mosque, they went to Muhammad, and said: ‘We have built a mosque for the sick and the needy and also for use in rainy and wintry nights, and we would like you to come and pray in it’.

They will swear: ‘We desired nothing, by building it, but, to do good’, by way of kindness towards the poor in times of heavy rain or extreme heat and in order to provide a place of worship for the Muslims;

And God bears witness that they are truly liars, in their claim of theirs.

They had asked Muhammad to perform prayers in it.

But Allah revealed verse 9:107; it says those who chose a place of worship out of opposition and disbelief, and in order to cause dissent among the believers, and as an outpost for those who warred against Allah and His messenger aforetime, they will surely swear: We purposed naught save good. Allah is the witness that they verily are liars. Never pray in their place.  Then, verse 9:108 says that Allah loves those who purify themselves physically and spiritually.

 

Then verse 9:108 says:

Never stand; never perform prayer, there,

A mosque which was founded, one whose foundations were built, upon piety from the first day, constructed the day you arrived in Medina  is worthier, than that [other one], for you to stand, to perform prayer, therein; in it are men, who love to purify themselves physically and spiritually; and God loves those who purify themselves

In other words, the verse says:

Never stand; never perform prayer, in the hypocrites’ mosque.

A place of worship which was founded upon duty to Allah,

Which was founded upon obedience and remembrance of Allah from the first day the Prophet Muhammad entered Medina;

It is also said this means: the first mosque ever built in Medina

Is more worthy, is more right to pray in it;

Wherein there are men who love to purify themselves, physically from filth and spiritually from the evil.

And Allah loves the purifiers, those who purify themselves

Verse 9:107-108 in different translations:

QARIB:

107) And there are those who have taken a mosque to cause harm, disbelief, and to divide the believers, and as a place of ambush for those who fought Allah and his messenger before. They swear: ‘we desired nothing but good’, but Allah bears witness that they are liars.

108) You shall never stand there. A mosque founded upon piety from the first day is worthier for you to stand in. in it are men who love to purify themselves. Allah loves those who purify themselves.

SHAKIR:

107) And those who built a masjid to cause harm and for unbelief and to cause disunion among the believers and an ambush to him who made war against Allah and his messenger before; and they will certainly swear: we did not desire aught but good; and Allah bears witness that they are most surely liars.

108) Never stand in it; certainly a masjid (mosque) founded on piety from the very first day is more deserving that you should stand in it; in it are men who love that they should be purified; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

107) And as for those who chose a place of worship out of opposition and disbelief, and in order to cause dissent among the believers, and as an outpost for those who warred against Allah and his messenger aforetime, they will surely swear: we purposed naught save good. Allah beareth witness that they verily are liars.

108) Never stand (to pray) there. a place of worship which was found upon duty (to Allah) from the first day is more worthy that thou shouldst stand (to pray) therein, wherein are men who love to purify themselves. Allah loveth the purifiers.

YUSUFALI:

107) And there are those who put up a mosque by way of mischief and infidelity – to disunite the believers – and in preparation for one who warred against Allah and his messenger aforetime. They will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good; but Allah doth declare that they are certainly liars.

108) Never stand thou forth therein. There is a mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety; it is more worthy of the standing forth (for prayer) therein. In it are men who love to be purified; and Allah loveth those who make themselves pure.

In the Noble Quran, Allah is asking mankind some important questions.

And verily,

Allah has made the Quran easy to read.

We know that many thousands of 6-9 years old kids can memorize the entire Quran and can recite it by heart very easily.

This is a unique feature of the Noble Quran.

Allah has facilitated its memorization and disposed it to serve as a source of remembrance.

Allah has made the recitation of the Quran easy.

So is there anyone who remembers?

Is there anyone who will be admonished by it and memorize it?

Is there any that seeks the truth?

Is there any that seeks wisdom?

Is there any that seeks knowledge and hence be helped to acquire it?

Allah loves (12) those who keep their duty

We have seen that Allah loves

(1) the kind good doers,

(2) those who turn to him and those who are Clean and Pure, (3) those who guard against evil,

(4) those who put their Trust in Him,

5) those who are firm and steadfast,

6) the virtuous,

7) the charitable,

8) judge in equity,

9) those who are just and are not biased,

10) the good doers who keep their Covenant and

11) the generous (Moh-se-neen).   I

n this article, Allah loves those who keep their duty (Motta-keen).

Verses 9:4 and 9:7 say that Allah loves those who keep their duty (those who guard themselves against sin). 

Allah loves those who keep their duty; this means that Allah will reward them in the afterlife.

Herein, the word translated as those who keep their duty or those who guard themselves against sin is “Motta-keen” in Arabic.

The noun of the word “Motta-keen” is “Takwa”.

One asked Aly Ben Abi-Taleb, the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin: what is “Takwa“?

Aly said: “Takwa” is:

1)    To fear God

2)    To follow your LORD’ Scripture

3)    To be satisfied of what your LORD is giving you!

4)    To be ready for your day departure (death).

Hence, “Takwa” has four deep meanings and levels.

What is the English word that could give these meanings?

As far as I know, the answer is: No word!

QARIB:

Except those idolaters who have fully honored their treaties with you and aided none against you; with these fulfill your covenant till their term Surely, Allah loves the righteous.

SHAKIR:

except those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement, then they have not failed you in anything and have not backed up any one against you, so fulfill their agreement to the end of their term; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).

PICKTHAL:

Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (as for these), fulfill their treaty to them till their term. lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto him).

YUSUFALI:

(But the treaties are) not dissolved with those pagans with whom ye have entered into alliance and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided any one against you. so fulfill your engagements with them to the end of their term: for Allah loveth the righteous.

The interpretation of Verse 9:4

Excepting those of the idolaters with whom you have made a pact, and who have not diminished their commitment to you in anyway, with regard to the terms of the pact, nor supported, assisted, anyone, from among the disbelievers, against you;

as for these, fulfill your pact with them until, the completion of, the term, to which you have agreed.

Truly God loves those who fear Him, by fulfilling pacts.

How can the idolaters have any treaty with Allah and his messenger, except those with whom you have made treaties by the sacred mosque? So long as they are straight with you, so be straight with them. Allah loves the righteous.

How can there be an agreement for the idolaters with Allah and with his messenger; except those with whom you made an agreement at the sacred mosque? So as long as they are true to you, be true to them; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).

PICKTHAL:

How can there be a treaty with Allah and with his messenger for the idolaters save those with whom ye made a treaty at the inviolable place of worship? So long as they are true to you, be true to them. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty.

YUSUFALI:

How can there be a league, before Allah and his messenger, with the pagans, except those with whom ye made a treaty near the sacred mosque? as long as these stand true to you, stand ye true to them: for Allah doth love the righteous.

The interpretation of Verse 9:7

How can the idolaters have a pact with God and His Messenger — they cannot —while they disbelieve in God and His Messenger,

They are acting treacherously;

Except for those with whom you made a pact at the Sacred Mosque (Inviolable Place of Worship) that is in Makkah,

So long as they are true to you, keeping to the pact and not breaking it, be true to them, by fulfilling it

Truly Allah loves the God-fearing:

The Prophet Muhammad had kept to the pact made with them until they broke it by supporting the disbelievers against Muslims.

Verse 5:93 says that Allah loves the generous which do deeds of righteousness, guard themselves from evil and believe in Allah, Prophet Muhammad and follow the Quran.

This verse was revealed before the wines (intoxicants) were made unlawful.

Their wine was made from unripe dates, split unripe dates and dates

Some of the believers died before the law of forbidden the alcoholics.

Then Allah revealed about a group of men from the Emigrants and the Helpers who asked the Prophet Muhammad:

“What shall happen to those of us who died drinking intoxicant drinks before they were made unlawful”,

The verse gave the answer:

There shall be no sin imputed unto those who believe in Allah, Muhammad and the Quran and do good works

That is between them and their Lord

For what they may have eaten in the past

For what they have drunk in the past before intoxicants were made unlawful, whether those who did it are dead or still living.

So be mindful of your duty to Allah, if they warded off disbelief, idolatry and indecencies, and do good works

That is between them and their Lord; and again:

Be mindful of your duty ward off making intoxicants lawful after they were made unlawful;

This address is to the believers who are still living, and believe in the unlawfulness of intoxicant; and once again:

Be mindful of your duty ward off drinking it, and do right leave the drinking of it. Allah loves the good for avoiding drinking intoxicants; this relates to those who were still alive and who drunk intoxicants before they were made unlawful.

Allah loves the generous which do deeds of righteousness, guard themselves from evil and believe in Allah, Prophet Muhammad and follow the Quran.

Allah loves the generous, means that He will reward them.

Herein, the word translated as generous, good or good doer is “Moh-se-neen” in Arabic.

The noun of the word “Moh-se-neen” is “Ihsan”.

One asked the Prophet Muhammad: “what is Ihsan

Muhammad said: to worship Allah as if you see him, if you can not, then worship Allah you see you all the time”!

Hence, “Ihsan” has to degree:

The first degree is that you act as if you see your LORD who creates you.

This is the first class of faith. If your faith could not attain the first degree, then,

The second degree is that you act and know that your LORD who Creates you Sees you all the time.

See in your mind’s eye what if mankind act while they know that their Creator Sees and Hears them all the time!

On the other hand, this deep connotations of the Arabic word “Moh-se-neen”  and “Ihsan” illustrate how poor are their English translations!

QARIB:

no blame shall be attached to those who believe and did good works in regard to any food they have eaten, so long as they ward off (the forbidden) and believe, and do good deeds, then they fear and believe, and again, so long as they fear and do fine deeds. Allah loves the generous.

SHAKIR:

on those who believe and do good there is no blame for what they eat, when they are careful (of their duty) and believe and do good deeds, then they are careful (of their duty) and believe, then they are careful (of their duty) and do good (to others), and Allah loves those who do good (to others)

PICKTHAL:

There shall be no sin (imputed) unto those who believe and do good works for what they may have eaten (in the past). So be mindful of your duty (to Allah), and believe, and do good works; and again: be mindful of your duty, and believe; and once again: be mindful of your duty, and do right. Allah loveth the good.

YUSUFALI:

On those who believe and do deeds of righteousness there is no blame for what they ate (in the past), when they guard themselves from evil, and believe, and do deeds of righteousness,- (or) again, guard themselves from evil and believe,- (or) again, guard themselves from evil and do good. For Allah loveth those who do good.
