Atheists in Quran (31) Noah pleads with his Atheist son

Aware of the terrible reality, Noah pleads with him for the last time: O my son! Do not be with the unbelievers lest you drown. His son said: I shall seek refuge in a mountain, which will afford me protection from the waves. In an instant, the gigantic waves swallow everything up, so he was among the drowned by the flood

———————————

The verses 11:40-42 say,

“Embark with us, my child, and do not stay with the unbelievers.”

As a proud arrogant, the Atheist son does not respond to his loving father.

He does not realize the extent of the terrible event that is taking place.

Noah said: O my son! Come ride with us

His son said: I shall take refuge in a mountain that will protect me, from the water’.

Noah said: O my son! Be saved with us

His son said: the mountain that will preserve me, from the flood’.

Noah said: O my son! Do not be with the unbelievers lest you drown

His son said: the mountain will prevent me from drowning, the mountain will afford me protection from the flood.

Aware of the terrible reality, Noah pleads with him for the last time:

“Today there is no protection for anyone from Allah’s judgment, except those who shall enjoy His mercy.”

In an instant, the scene changes and the gigantic waves swallow everything up:

The Huge waves came between them, so he was among the drowned by the flood

Today as we read this story, it is as if we see these events happening now before our very own eyes.

The ark is sailing amid huge waves, Noah, the worried father makes one plea after another; his conceited young son insolently turns his back, and then suddenly a towering wave settles the issue.

Everything is over as if the dialogue did not take place.

The element of fear and worry in this scene is measured by its:

  1. Depth in the human soul, in the conversation between Noah and his son.
  2. Extent in nature, as the waves rise high to submerge the tops of the mountains.

Both elements are equal.

This is a distinctive feature of how the Quran tells us about the ancient people.

——

Then, the storm subsides, an air of calmness spreads, the matter is settled according to Allah’s will.

The verse here gives the impression of something coming to a complete standstill.

“And the word was spoken: ‘Earth, swallow up your waters. Heaven, cease (your rain).’ Thus, the waters sank into the earth, and Allah’s will was done, and the ark came to rest on Mount Judi. The word was spoken: Away with these evil-doing folk.’”

It was said,

‘O earth, swallow your waters, that have sprung forth from you, and the Earth reabsorbed it and

O heaven, abate!’ withhold the rain, and it did.

The waters subsided, the affair was accomplished, the matter of the destruction of Noah’s people was complete and it settled,

The earth swallows up its water and the heaven stops raining.

Furthermore, the earth’s surface was soon dry, as excess waters penetrated deep underground.

Allah addressed the earth and the heavens as if they were human beings.

Both comply with the commandment.

No wonder they did when they are Allah’s obedient creatures.

“Allah’s will was done and the ark came to rest on Mount Judi.”

That was its final stop. “The word was spoken: ‘Away with these evil-doing folk.’”

  • Those who were supposed to be destroyed were destroyed and
  • Those who were supposed to be saved were saved.

It was said:

‘Away with perish the evildoing, disbelieving, folk!’

The Quran does not say who said this statement, but it generates the impression that the whole affair does not in need to be considered again.

Let the evildoers disappear beyond Allah’s mercy for they deserve to be expelled;

Let them be banished from memory, for they do not deserve to be remembered.

———————————

The verses 11:43-44 in different translations:

QARIB:

43- But he replied: ‘i shall seek refuge on a mountain, which will protect me from the water. ‘He (Noah) said: ‘today, there is no defender from the command of Allah, except those to whom he has mercy. ‘And the waves came between them, and he was drowned.

44- And it was said: ‘earth, swallow up your waters. Heaven, cease! ‘The water subsided and the matter was accomplished. And the ark came to rest upon (the mountain of) aljudi, and it was said: ‘be gone, evildoing nation! ‘

SHAKIR:

43- He said: i will betake myself for refuge to a mountain that shall protect me from the water. Nuh said: there is no protector today from Allah’s punishment but he who has mercy; and a wave intervened between them, so he was of the drowned

44- And it was said: o earth, swallow down your water, and o cloud, clear away; and the water was made to abate and the affair was decided, and the ark rested on the judi, and it was said: away with the unjust people

PICKTHAL:

43- He said: i shall betake me to some mountain that will save me from the water. (Noah) said: this day there is none that saveth from the commandment of Allah save him on whom he hath had mercy. And the wave came in between them, so he was among the drowned.

44- And it was said: o earth! swallow thy water and, o sky! be cleared of clouds! and the water was made to subside. And the commandment was fulfilled. And it (the ship) came to rest upon (the mount) al-judi and it was said: a far removal for wrongdoing folk!

YUSUFALI:

43- The son replied: “i will betake myself to some mountain: it will save me from the water.” Noah said: “this day nothing can save, from the command of Allah, any but those on whom he hath mercy! “And the waves came between them, and the son was among those overwhelmed in the flood.

44- Then the word went forth: “o earth! Swallow up thy water, and o sky! Withhold (thy rain)!” and the water abated, and the matter was ended. The ark rested on mount Judi, and the word went forth: “away with those who do wrong!”

Atheists in Quran (29) they mocked Noah

Allah commanded Noah: Build the ark and Noah did.

While building the ark, group after group of the insolent Atheists men pass by and scoff at Noah and his followers. Noah said to them, though you mock us today, yet we mock you tomorrow, because Allah will save us and will drown you.

———————————

In the previous article, Allah told Noah:

“None of your people will believe apart from those who have already accepted the faith.”

Those who are susceptible to faith have already accepted it. The others are hopeless.

Therefore, it is over and the unbelievers are done.

Allah commanded Noah: Build the ark

The verses 11:37-39 disclose the story of building the Ark and tell us what happened during building it, the verses say:

Build the Ark under Our watch, protection and inspiration and by Our command

We will look after you and give you instructions as you do so.

Start the construction of the ship under Our care and by Our command.

[Then, we have to watch this Allah’ strong order]

Do not address Me concerning the unbelievers who have done evil, by asking that I should refrain from destroying them

Do not plead with Me on behalf of those unbelievers about saving them.

The Atheists’ destiny has been decided and you are not to plead their case.

You can neither pray for them to be guided to the truth, nor can you pray for their punishment.

Prayers are to no avail when Allah’s will comes to pass.

Verily, they will be drowned by the flood.

————-

Noah and his followers were building the Ark

Every time that chieftain of a notable council, a group, of his people passed him, they scoffed at him

Whenever a group, of his people passed him, they made mock of him, they derided him for so doing.

They told Noah’s followers that they are following an insane.

Noah builds the ark and group after group of his insolent people pass by and scoff at him. They scoff at the man who said he was a messenger from Allah and argued long with them, but who now busies himself making a boat. They mock him because they can only see what appears to them.

Noah said unto them:

The same you scoff at us is the same we scoff at you.

Though you make mock of us today, yet we mock at you tomorrow.

Because we are saved, while you drown.

Noah, on the other hand, is full of confidence as he tells them that their mockery will rebound. We will scoff at you because you cannot visualize that Allah has a definite purpose beyond all this, and you cannot imagine what awaits you.

Will this apply to us or to you when everything will be revealed?

You shall know to whom will come a punishment that will confound, humiliate and destroy him

You shall know upon whom an everlasting chastisement will fall and will be enjoined upon in the Hereafter.

———————————

The verses 11: 37-39 in different translations:

QARIB:

37- Build the ark with our seeing (and protection), and as we reveal. do not speak to me concerning the evildoers; they shall be drowned. ‘

38- Whenever an assembly of his nation passed by him as he was building the ark, they mocked him. whereupon he said: ‘if you mock us, we shall indeed mock you, just as you mock.

39- You shall know to whom a degrading punishment will come, and upon whom an everlasting punishment will fall. ‘

SHAKIR:

37- And make the ark before our eyes and (according to) our revelation, and do not speak to me in respect of those who are unjust; surely they shall be drowned

38- And he began to make the ark; and whenever the chiefs from among his people passed by him they laughed at him. he said: if you laugh at us, surely we too laugh at you as you laugh (at us)

39- So shall you know who it is on whom will come a chastisement which will disgrace him, and on whom will lasting chastisement come down

PICKTHAL:

37- Build the ship under our eyes and by our inspiration, and speak not unto me on behalf of those who do wrong. lo! they will be drowned.

38- And he was building the ship, and every time that chieftains of his people passed him, they made mock of him. he said: though ye make mock of us, yet we mock at you even as ye mock;

39- And ye shall know to whom a punishment that will confound him cometh, and upon whom a lasting doom will fall.

YUSUFALI:

37- “But construct an ark under our eyes and our inspiration, and address me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the flood).”

38- Forthwith he (starts) constructing the ark: every time that the chiefs of his people passed by him, they threw ridicule on him. he said: “if ye ridicule us now, we (in our turn) can look down on you with ridicule likewise!

39- “But soon will ye know who it is on whom will descend a penalty that will cover them with shame,- on whom will be unloosed a penalty lasting:”

Atheists in Quran (25) Atheists of Noah vs. Atheists today

All the Prophets sent by Allah to guide humankind to the right path are liars in the eyes of the Atheists. Thousands of years later (after Noah), such standards and values still gain the upper hand in the today Atheists’ mind.

———————————

The verses 11:25-27 of the Noble Quran say:

Verily Allah sent Noah to his people [and he said]: ‘I am a clear warner for you, one whose warning is plain.

I am a warning Messenger who speaks a language you understand that you worship none but Allah; you confess the divine Oneness of none save Allah

Lo! I fear for you, should you worship other than Him, the chastisement of a painful day that is painful in this world and in the Hereafter.

I know that there shall come upon you if you do not believe the retribution of a painful Day, which is drowning.

The Atheists who were the council, notables, the respected elders and the chieftains of Noah’s people said:

  1. We see you but a mortal like us, you eat and drink just as we do eat and drink
  2. You have no merit over us, for which you would deserve our following you
  3. We see that your followers are but the vilest among us
  4. Those who follow you are the riffraff among us, such as the weavers and the shoemakers
  5. Those who follow you are the most abject, the lowly and the weak among us
  6. Those who follow you are impulsively without thinking; their bad judgment lead them to believe in you.
  7. Nay, we deem you liars with regard to your claim to be bringing a Message

The Atheists among Noah’s people apply here the erroneous standards that make

  • Honor = wealth,
  • Understanding = influence
  • Position = bank balance
  • Knowledge = power.

Thousands of years later, such standards and values still gain the upper hand in the today Atheists’ mind

Finally, they accused Noah as a Liar.

The same happened to the entire prophets from Noah to Muhammad.

All the Prophets sent by Allah to guide humankind to the right path are liars in the eyes of the Atheists.

This is the attitude of people who have full pockets but empty hearts and minds.

Their pride and arrogance are limitless.

———————————

The verses 11:25-27 in different translations:

QARIB:

25-We sent Noah to his nation. (he said:) ‘i am a warner for you, and a bearer of glad tidings.

26-Worship none except Allah. i fear for you the punishment of a painful day. ‘

27-The unbelieving council of his nation said: ‘we do not see you other than a human like ourselves. we see your followers are none but the lowliest amongst us, and their opinion is not to be considered. we do not see you superior to us, rather, we consider you liars. ‘

SHAKIR:

25-And certainly we sent nuh to his people: surely i am a plain warner for you:

26-That you shall not serve any but Allah، surely i fear for you the punishment of a painful day

27-But the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: we do not consider you but a mortal like ourselves, and we do not see any have followed you but those who are the meanest of us at first thought and we do not see in you any excellence over us; nay, we deem you liars

PICKTHAL:

25-And we sent Noah unto his folk (and he said): lo! i am a plain warner unto you.

26-That ye serve none، save Allah. Lo! I fear for you the retribution of a painful day.

27-The chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: we see thee but a mortal like us, and we see not that any follow thee save the most abject among us, without reflection. we behold in you no merit above us – nay, we deem you liars.

YUSUFALI:

25-We sent Noah to his people (with a mission): “I have come to you with a clear warning:

26-“That ye serve none but Allah: verily I do fear for you the penalty of a grievous day.”

27-But the chiefs of the unbelievers among his people said: “we see (in) thee nothing but a man like ourselves: nor do we see that any follow thee but the meanest among us, in judgment immature: nor do we see in you (all) any merit above us: in fact we thing ye are liars!”

Atheists in Quran (8) they contend with falsehood

Throughout the History, the Atheists disputed their messengers with falsehood; their aim was to invalidate the truth of Allah’ scriptures and message.

———————————

The meanings of the verse 18:56:

Allah sent a messenger (and/or prophet) to every nation.

Allah sent his messengers with one message; it is believe in Allah, the One, the Almighty Creator, the Merciful, the Forgiving, He has no partner, no similar, no son etc.

Allah’s messengers were bearers and warners

  • They were bearers of good tidings (Paradise) to believers
  • They were warners against Eternal hell for the disbelievers

All the messengers and the prophets were belied by most of their people, folks, tribes and nations.

The Atheists among the people of the messengers belied them and disbelieved in them.

The Atheists who disbelieved disputed with falsehood.

The Atheists gave many false reasons to justify their disbelief

They say for example:

  • Has God sent a human as a messenger?
  • God has to send an Angel not a human
  • We have never heard about that from our ancients
  • Why God choose this man specifically?
  • We want to see God and talk to him
  • Etc. of their foolish and ignorant falsehood

When they say that and the like of such statements, that they may refute thereby, that by way of their disputing they may invalidate the truth of Allah’ scriptures.

Throughout the History, the Atheists disputed their messengers with falsehood, their aim was to invalidate the truth of Allah’ scriptures and message.

This happened to all the messengers like for example Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, Zachariah, John, Jesus and Prophet Muhammad

Sometimes, the Atheists knew some verses of the Quran and they take them in mockery

They have taken in mockery the verses of the Quran that whereof they have been warned, in the way of the Eternal Hell.

They take Allah’s revelations, messengers, and that wherewith they are threatened of chastisement as a jest and mockery.

———————————

The verse 18:56 in different translations:

QARIB:

We send our messengers only to proclaim glad tidings and to give warning. but the unbelievers dispute with false arguments so that they may belie the truth. they have taken my verses and warnings in mockery.

SHAKIR:

And we do not send messengers but as givers of good news and warning, and those who disbelieve make a false contention that they may render null thereby the truth, and they take my communications and that with which they are warned for a mockery

PICKTHAL:

We send not the messengers save as bearers of good news and warners. Those who disbelieve contend with falsehood in order to refute the truth thereby. And they take our revelations and that wherewith they are threatened as a jest.

YUSUFALI:

We only send the messengers to give glad tidings and to give warnings: but the unbelievers dispute with vain argument, in order therewith to weaken the truth, and they treat my signs as a jest, as also the fact that they are warned!

Atheists in Quran (1) Noah and the Atheists

The history of Atheists is deep-rooted ever since the time of the Prophet Noah.

Chapter 23 of the Noble Quran discloses the story of the great Prophet Noah and the Atheists.

The meanings of the verses 23:23-24:

Verily Allah sent Noah to his people to tell them:

  • My people, worship God, obey God and profess Allah’s divine Oneness.
  • You have no other god besides Him
  • You have no other god save the One in whom I command you to believe
  • Will you not then fear Him?
  • Will you not then fear His punishment in worshipping gods other than Him?
  • Will you not ward off evil the worship of other than Allah?

However, the chieftains Atheists among his folk, said to their followers:

  • Noah would like to make himself superior to you by claiming his message and prophet hood
  • Noah is only a mortal, a human being like you.
  • This is just a human being like you who desires to gain superiority, to have the honor, over you, by acquiring followers, you being his followers
  • And had God willed, that none other than Him be worshipped,

He surely would have sent down angels, with that Message, and not assigned a human being for it.

  • We have not heard that which Noah is saying in the time of our fathers of old.
  • We never heard of such, an affirmation of God’s Oneness as that which Noah summons us, among our ancestors or among past communities.

To be continued.

———————————

The verses 23:23-24 in different translations:

QARIB:

23-We sent Noah to his nation. ‘Worship Allah, my nation, ‘ he said, ‘for you have no god except He. Will you not be cautious? ‘

24-The unbelieving assembly of his nation said: ‘this is but a human like you, who desires to gain superiority over you. had Allah willed, he could have sent down angels. we never heard of this among our ancient forefathers.

SHAKIR:

23-And certainly we sent nuh to his people, and he said: o my people! Serve Allah, you have no god other than him; will you not then guard (against evil)?

24-And the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: he is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who desires that he may have superiority over you, and if Allah had pleased, he could certainly have sent down angels. we have not heard of this among our fathers of yore:

PICKTHAL:

23-And we verily sent Noah unto his folk, and he said: o my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?

24-But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: this is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, he surely could have sent down angels. we heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old.

YUSUFALI:

23- (Further, we sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Noah to his people: he said, “o my people! Worship Allah! ye have no other god but him. Will ye not fear (him)?”

24-The chiefs of the unbelievers among his people said: “he is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), he could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old.”

Angels in Islam (27) Gabriel conveyed Allah’s message

The great Angel Gabriel conveyed Allah’s message to His entire Prophets.

The event of the first revelation of the Quran is mentioned in the Bible.

——————————————-

The duties of the Angels are many.

One of their important duties is to convey the revelation from Allah to His Messengers.

The great Angel Gabriel (Jibreel) is the one responsible for handing over Allah’s message to Allah’s Messengers and Prophets.

Gabriel conveyed Allah’s message to some thousands of Prophets which Allah sent.

Although the Quran mentions 25 Prophets by names, however; Allah sent at least one messenger to every nation from Adam up to Muhammad (the last one).

Gabriel conveyed Allah’s message to the Prophets Noah, Hood, Salih, Abraham, Lot, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Shu’aib, Moses, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Elisha, Jonah, Zachariah, John, Jesus etc.

Allah’s message to His entire Messengers and Prophets is the same that is there is no god but Allah and submit to Him.

Literally, submission to Allah means Islam

The story of the first revelation of the Quran

Essential background:

Muhammad was born and raised in Mecca, he was illiterate.

His family was very big power-wise and authority-wise.

However, he was concerned with the social conflict, injustice, widespread discrimination (principally against women and black people), fighting among tribes and abuse of ancestral authorities dominant in pre-Islamic Arabia. The moral deterioration of his fellow people, and the err religion of worshipping idols.

He never ever worshiped an idol

He used to spend many hours or few days in a cave sitting alone looking for his Creator and feeling sorry about his people who used to worship many different idols.

When He was 40 years and while he was in the cave, Gabriel appeared to him.

Gabriel gave him a piece of paper and commanded him to read what was written in it.

Muhammad said: I cannot read, I am not a reader

Gabriel hugged him powerfully, then left him and commanded him again to read what was written. Muhammad’s reply was the same.

The powerful Gabriel’s hug and his command repeated twice but yielding the same Muhammad’s reply.

Then Gabriel said:

Read! In the name of your Lord and Cherisher, He is the One Who created

He Created man, out of “Alaq”

Read! And your Lord is Most Bountiful,

Who taught man with the use of the pen,-

He taught man that which he knew not.

(The verses 96:1-5)

And this was the first revelation of the Quran.

To whom it may concern

The event of the first revelation of the Quran is mentioned in the Bible (Isaiah 29:12).

Attention: None of the Israelites’ prophets was illiterate!

Isaiah 29:12

Common English Bible:

12- And when the scroll is given to one who can’t read, saying, “Read this,” that one will say, “I can’t read.”

American Standard Version

12- And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I am not learned.

Amplified Bible

12- And when the book is given to him who is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray you, he says, I cannot read.

Angels in Islam (21) their second Witness

The Angels whose number is countless bear witness of Muhammad’s prophet hood and of the Quran as being revealed by Allahز

————————————————

The idolaters among the Arabs were confused about Muhammad, they were still suspicious if he is genuine prophet or not!

To make it clear for them, Allah has revealed the verses 4:163-166 that mean:

Lo! We (Allah) inspired you O Muhammad as We inspired Noah and the entire prophets after Noah,

We inspire you O Muhammad as We inspired:

  • Abraham
  • Ishmael
  • Isaac
  • Jacob and the tribes (the sons of Jacob),
  • Jesus
  • Job
  • Jonah
  • Aaron, and
  • Solomon,
  • We gave unto David the Inscribed Book (the Psalms)

We inspired you O Muhammad We inspired messengers which We have not mentioned by name in the Quran.

And Allah spoke directly unto Moses.

It is said that Allah sent eight thousand prophets in total; He sent at least one messenger or prophet to every nation on the face of the earth.

Allah has sent all these messengers:

  • of good cheer, giving the good news of Paradise for those who believe, and
  • of warning of hell for those who disbelieve in Allah,

Allah did that in order that mankind might have no argument on the Day of Judgment against Allah after sending the messengers, such that they cannot say: You have not sent us any messenger.

Allah is ever Mighty in His kingdom. He is ever Wise, in His actions.

Then, the idolaters among the Arabs asked the Jews if Muhammad is a Prophet or not.

The idolaters asked the Jews because the Jews are the people of Allah’ scripture.

When the Jews were asked about Muhammad’s prophet hood and they denied him, although they knew that he is the last prophet, when this happened, the following verse of the Noble Quran has revealed; it means:

But Allah bears witness:

  • of your prophet hood O Muhammad
  • of what He has revealed to you O Muhammad (the Quran), He has revealed it through His knowledge

And also, the entire Angels bear witness.

The entire world of the Angels whose number is countless bear witness too.

This is the second witness of the Angels.

O you smart reader, where you are from this second witness of countless billions of Angels that will lead you to either Paradise or Hell

————————————————

The verses 4:163-166 (PICKTHAL translation):

163) lo! We inspire thee as we inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as we inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as we imparted unto David the psalms;

164) and messengers we have mentioned unto thee before and messengers we have not mentioned unto thee; and Allah spake directly unto Moses;

165) messengers of good cheer and of warning, in order that mankind might have no argument against Allah after the messengers. Allah was ever mighty, wise.

166) but Allah (himself) testifieth concerning that which he hath revealeth unto thee; in his knowledge hath he revealed it; and the Angels also testify. and Allah is sufficient witness.

Many people do not know Allah. This series is an attempt to help them to know their Creator.

Verses 7:159-161 of the Noble Quran talk about:

1) Allah Said to Moses: Strike the rock with your staff,

2) Allah divided the Israelites into twelve tribes,

3) The Quran says: Not All Moses’ People were Evil-doers,

4) How has Allah protected the Israelites from the heat of the sun?

5) What was the food of the Israelites during their wilderness?

6) What Did Allah Command The Israelites about Eating?

7) When Allah Commanded the Israelites to Dwell the City?

8) What Did Allah Command the Israelites to say when they dwell in the township?

———————————–

The meaning of verse 7:159

And among the people of Moses there is a community, a group, who guide, people, by the truth and act justly according to it, when passing judgments.

And of Moses’ folk there is a community, a group who lead with, enjoin, truth and establish justice therewith; they act upon the Truth.

The meaning of verse 7:160

And Allah divided them, He separated the Children of Israel, into twelve tribes.

And Allah revealed to Moses, when his people  asked him for water, in the wilderness, saying: ‘Strike the rock with your staff’, and he struck it, and there gushed forth, burst forth, from it twelve fountains, equal to the number of tribes, each people, [each] tribe among them, now knew their drinking-place.

And Allah made the cloud overshadow them, in the wilderness, from the heat of the sun,

Allah sent down to them manna (the food miraculously supplied to the Israelites in the wilderness; it is said that it is a type of citrus) and quails (a small, migratory chickenlike birds).

And Allah said (commanded) to them: ‘Eat of the good things We have provided for you.’ And they did not wrong Us, but they wronged themselves.

i.e. They wronged Us not, they did not hurt or harm Us because of what they committed, but they were wont to wrong themselves, to harm and hurt themselves.

The meaning of verse 7:161

And, when it was said to them, ‘Dwell in this city, and eat therein wherever you will, and say, ‘our concern is for [an], Exoneration,’ and enter the gate, that is, the gate of the city, prostrating, it is said that the herein was actually a bow. Then, Allah shall forgive you your transgressions; and Allah shall give more to those who are virtuous, through obedience, in terms of reward.

In other words, the verse says: and when it was said unto them: Dwell in this township, and eat therefrom whence you will, and whenever you will, and say “Repentance”; and say: there is no deity except Allah; it is also said that this means: say O Our Lord! Verses 7:159-161 in different English translations of the meanings of Arabic Quran:

QARIB:

159) Yet among the people of Moses there was a nation who preached the truth and acted justly.

160) We divided them into twelve tribes, each a nation. and when his people demanded drink, we revealed to Moses: ‘strike the rock with your staff. ‘ thereupon twelve springs gushed from the rock and each tribe knew its drinkingplace. we caused the clouds to cast their shadow over them, and sent down for them manna and quails, saying: ‘eat of the good things we have provided for you. ‘ indeed, they did us no wrong, but they wronged themselves.

161) When it was said to them: ‘dwell in this village, and eat of whatever you please; and say, “unburdening” and enter the gate prostrating, we will forgive you your sins and increase the gooddoers. ‘

SHAKIR:

160) And we divided them into twelve tribes, as nations; and we revealed to Musa when his people asked him for water: strike the rock with your staff, so outnowed from it twelve springs; each tribe knew its drinking place; and we made the clouds to give shade over them and we sent to them manna and quails: eat of the good things we have given you. And they did not do us any harm, but they did injustice to their own souls

161) And when it was said to them: reside in this town and eat from it wherever you wish, and say, put down from us our heavy burdens: and enter the gate making obeisance, we will forgive you your wrongs: we will give more to those who do good (to others)

PICKTHAL:

161) And when it was said unto them: dwell in this township and eat therefrom whence ye will, and say “repentance,” and enter the gate prostrate; we shall forgive you your sins; we shall increase (reward) for the right-doers.

161) And remember it was said to them: “dwell in this town and eat therein as ye wish, but say the word of humility and enter the gate in a posture of humility: we shall forgive you your faults; we shall increase (the portion of) those who do good.”

The meaning of verse 7:137

And Allah bequeathed upon the Children of Israel, the people who were oppressed, through bondage, the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which Allah had blessed, with water, fertile land, fruits and trees.

And the fair word of your Lord was fulfilled, which was His saying, exalted be He (in verse 28:5):

Yet We desired to be gracious to those who were oppressed in the land, namely, the Children of Israel because they endured patiently, persecution at the hands of their enemy.

And Allah destroyed utterly what Pharaoh and his folk had been creating, by way of architecture, and what they had been erecting, what they had been raising of edifices.

In other words, Allah caused the folk who were despised, who were humiliated to inherit the eastern and the western parts of the land the land thereof which Allah had blessed, with water and trees.  And the fair word of the Lord to reward them with victory was fulfilled and became incumbent for the Children of Israel because of their endurance in the face of affliction;

it is also said: for their endurance upon their religion; and Allah annihilated, destroyed all that Pharaoh and his folk had done of castles and townships and that they had contrived and that which they had planted of trees and vines; it is also said that this means: that which they had built.

The meaning of verse 7:138

And Allah brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came upon, they passed by, a people cleaving in devotion to idols they had, constantly worshiping them.

In other words, Allah brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were remnants of the people of Abraham, who were given up to idols which they had, who worshiped idols. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god show us a god to worship even as they have gods to worship. Moses said: Lo! are ignorant; you are a folk who do not know not the command of Allah.
